DR. VALENTI NAMED 2012 VISIONARY PRINCIPAL of the YEAR
The New Jersey Principal and Supervisor Association announced that Dr. Paula Pelak – Valenti has been named 2012 Visionary Principal of the Year. After being named a finalist in the awards program, NJPSA conducted a site-visit to the high school campus touring classrooms highlighting special programs, met with representatives of Central Office and school-based administrators, students and teachers.
Dr. Valenti has implemented successful programs in a number of areas to raise test scores, reduce bullying, and enhance 21st century skills. She also co-teaches a Middle College Arts & Humanities-based course where students attend museums, theater performances, operas and symphonies. Dr. Valenti has created an environment where teachers feel empowered to try new ideas, share their best practices with other teachers, and feel supported from every direction. This type leadership and support is critically essential to a fully functioning school where students themselves feel empowered, eager and ready to learn.
The NJPSA Visionary Leadership Awards program is designed to recognize all levels of educational leaders, with each award recipient receiving a $3,000 award for his/her school, as well as a personal award. Chosen from among many excellent applicants by a committee of fellow educators/NJPSA board members, Dr. Valenti is one representative of all that is great in education. Possessing an understanding of and commitment to the need for family/community atmospheres and for true relationships among students and faculty makes the visionary leader one who will propel education into the future. As recipient of the NJPSA Visionary Award Dr. Valenti becomes the NJ nominee for the corresponding National Association of Secondary School Principals National Awards program.
Vote for EHS Victims of Volume 2 on the U Got Brains Website
Emerson Jr. Sr. High School has been named, once again, a U Got Brains Champion School for 2011-2012 and has been selected to compete in the “U Got Brains Champion Schools Program,” sponsored by the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey, the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, the Allstate Foundation and NJ Manufacturers Insurance Company. Emerson’s “Victims of Volume II” project received $1000 to develop a new teen driving safety campaign based on their award-winning program, Victims of Volume, that won  First Place-runner-up in last year’s competition. This year the focus is on distracted driving. The team has presented many events such as the speaker, Jacy Good, from the group, FocusDriven;  two X the TXT events, one at the high school, and one at Villano; a demonstration by Ford with their new cars’ MYKEY feature which has many parental controls such as volume on radio, speed limit, seat belt usage and much more; an X the TXT event for the community at Shop Rite in Emerson; and in honor of the month of April being Distracted Driving Month, a proclamation by Mayor Carlos Colina to name April 4th as Victims of Volume II Day; and the high school naming April 16th as Distracted Driver Awareness Day which presented two speakers who addressed grades 7-12 on the dangers of distracted driving. On April 18, All American Ford presented their MYKEY demonstration which shows the parental controls in the Ford Focus and other vehicles. On Friday, the Victims of Volume team and Allstate Insurance presented the X the TXT to shoppers. Spring Letter to Parents

March 2012

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Spring will soon be here and with it the renewal of promises to maintain routines aimed at accomplishing personal and scholastic goals! One of the challenges facing the Emerson Junior/Senior High school staff each day is to promote a wholesome and supportive learning atmosphere throughout the school year. While the warmer months provide opportunity for more causal dress and a relaxed attitude, please be reminded that there are still eleven more weeks of school. This correspondence will provide a review of some non-negotiable rules to ensure a happy, successful and safe ending to the school year.

In any school it is necessary that rules and regulations be established, and followed, for the safety and well-being of all. Cooperation between the home and school is essential if this goal is to be obtained and to derive maximum benefits from the educational program.

While cell phones and internet access are components of a post-modern twenty-first century lifestyle, their use/misuse can create a distraction from learning and attainment of goals. I recommend that Middle School children be provided with limited phone service capability for emergency contacts and that access to internet sites be actively monitored or denied in total. Middle School children do not have the maturity to use these tools with wisdom and can find themselves at the center of controversy with inappropriate cell phone and internet use. Emerson Board of Education Policy (5516) states that electronic communication devices are not permitted during school hours.

As the warmer weather approaches it is important for students to continue to arrive on time for school (7:45 am) and wear appropriate clothing that will not distract from the learning process. Keep in mind that Emerson Board of Education has adopted the following policies related to student attendance and dress.

Dress Code specifies:

The following apparel is not permitted:

1.    Bare midriff outfits, short blouses, or halters;

2.    Undergarments which are meant to be worn under an outer garment;

3.    Any clothing or wearing apparel which presents a danger of disruption to any student or damage to property;

4.    T-shirts without sleeves or which have an unacceptable message;

5.    Hats are not permitted to be worn during school hours inside the building by males and females;

6.    Flip-flops and beachwear sandals are not permitted due to safety reasons.

If it is determined that a student is wearing something that does not comply with the dress code, a parent/guardian will be called and asked to bring in an article of clothing that is acceptable.

Attendance:

District policy permits students to miss up to 12 “accumulative” class sessions in a year long course, 6 in a semester course and 3 in a quarter course.  Once the limit is reached, students receive no course credit regardless of class performance. Senior students must maintain good attendance to ensure participation in celebratory events, i.e., senior seminar, prom and graduation.

Please take the time to review these standards and expectations with your child and thank you for your support with their implementation. Please contact me should you have any questions regarding this correspondence.

On another note - SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENTS night is scheduled for Thursday, April 12th at Emerson Jr.-Sr. High School. During the course of the evening your children and their teachers will be presenting lessons and activities representing grades 7-12. Additionally, student work will be on display throughout the building.

The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. and conclude at approximately 8:50 p.m. Whether you stop by a drama class to listen to a monologue, drop-in on a science lab experiment, or participate in a SMART board demonstration, the evening is always a wonderful experience for all. This night has been organized to enable you to see what goes on in your children’s classes or attend a class that your children might take in the future.

At present, students are being encouraged by their teachers to volunteer for the evening in at least one curricular area. Many of your children’s teachers will be present or working in collaborative teams demonstrating interdisciplinary initiatives for which Emerson is known state-wide. I’m sure you will leave this event reassured that Emerson is a great place to live and that the Middle/High School is a good school for learning. Please set aside time to join us at SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENTS night.

I look forward to seeing you on April 12th.

PLEASE NOTE:

 January 2012

Dear Parents of Grade 10 and 11 Students,

Despite winter, it is time to consider 2012 - 2013 scheduling options for students. Emerson Junior/Senior High School offers opportunities for high achieving students in grades ten and eleven to enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) courses provided they meet certain requirements and academic standards set by the school. AP courses offer students college-level coursework while still in high school. Entry to AP courses require students to have an A average, a strong PSAT score, teacher recommendation, accompanied by a serious, disciplined and sustained approach to study. Some AP courses also require a pre-assignment (check with each teacher for specific application and assignment deadlines). Students must agree to attend monthly AP tutorials and pay the prevailing AP exam fee for each course. Due to the challenging AP curriculum, and required AP test, students are limited to the number of AP courses they may take during a school year and only fully subscribed courses will run. Additional courses, for college credit, are available through the Middle College program.

Please discuss these opportunities with your child. Our Guidance Department will provide advisement; please contact Ms. Diebner, Secretary by calling (201) 599-4178 (ext. 1350) to arrange for an appointment with a Counselor.

The band will be under the direction of Mr. Curt Ebersole, Band Director at Northern Valley  Old Tappan.  For more information, Please contact Mr. Michael Lione (mlione@emerson.k12.nj.us) or visit the MEBCI website at: www.mebci.org.
SEVEN EMERSON STUDENTS SELECTED FOR MEBCI County Chorus
Emerson (NJ)… Carly Stathakis - Alto 2, Anthony Fox - Bass 1, Vincent Giacalone - Bass 1, Joe Viola - Tenor 1 , Aaron Gordon – Tenor 1, Graham Ullman– Tenor 2, and David Denari– Tenor 2 were accepted into the Music Educators of Bergen County, Incorporated 2011 High School County Chorus. Twelve Emerson students competed and seven earned a placed in the program. Joe Viola earned the BEST score out of 18 accepted Tenor 1 singers and 22 Tenor 1’s’ overall.  Additionally, Vincent Giacalone has been accepted into this prestigious group since entering Middle School, grades seven and eight, and through four years of High School; a total of six years in a row.

The Music Educators of Bergen County, Inc. strives to enrich the lives of students in the schools of Bergen County through the teaching of music and to promote a closer fellowship among music educators. The MEBCI membership meets for discussion of mutual problems and exchange of ideas to enhance professional growth and development as music educators.

This year, the MEBCI High School Chorus will be conducted by Argine Safari from the Pascack Valley Regional HS district.  Over thirty schools from across Bergen County were represented in the audition process; sending over 300 students to the event.  Each student audition requires singing scales and an 8 measure solo.  Students are also expected to sight-sing a four measure melody after hearing it played on the piano twice.  The jurors, music educators from Bergen County, score the students for each step in the process.  Entrants with the lowest scores may be accepted, based on a judgment call by the conductor as to how many baritones, tenors, altos and sopranos will blend effectively to make the full chorus.  Once students are accepted they are required to rehearse six musical pieces independently until four rehearsals are scheduled in January and the entire group meets to rehearse.  MEBCI teachers conduct the rehearsals and organize the entire concert.  MEBCI ensures a safe and sensitive audition process and aims to ensure that every student accepted, or not, feels like they have gained something from their individual experience.

This year’s concert will be held on January 15, 2012 at 3:00 PM at Westwood High School. Please contact Mr. William Ullman (wullman@emerson.k12.nj.us) or visit the MEBCI website at: www.mebci.org.
Campus Traffic
October 2011

Dear Parents/Guardians,

In an attempt to ensure the safety of all students and staff who enter and exit the campus via automobile before, during, and after school, I would like to bring some matters that require your immediate attention:

  1. Morning Drop-off of Students – Students are expected to be in the building and at the classroom by 7:45 am daily. Parents who drive their children to school are strongly encouraged to drop students at the curb and/or at the crosswalk where a Crossing Guard is stationed to assist crossing the Main Street. Additionally, please adhere to the traffic flow patterns of the campus.
  2. Illegal Left Hand Turn –Drivers who make illegal left hand turns out of the senior lot are driving against the flow of traffic. This is a dangerous practice that will result in loss of driving privileges. In addition, the Emerson police department will be notified and student drivers will be ticketed.
  3. Illegal Parking- Parking in an unmarked space provides no room for student drivers to maneuver their vehicles in the student lot. Students who park in unmarked spaces will lose their driving privileges and will be referred to the Emerson Police Department for violation and ticketing.
  4. Provisional Driver’s License-The members of the Emerson Police Department, with the approval of the Superintendent of Schools, will conduct random unannounced campus checks of student drivers/cars with regard to the holding of a Provisional License(39:3-13.4)

Adherence to the Emerson High School driving and parking regulations will help to ensure the safety of all who drive or walk to school at any time of the day.

Please discuss these above listed items with your son or daughter. Thank you for your support of these safety initiatives. Please contact me at the high school should you have any questions: (201) 599-4178.

Sincerely,

Paula Valenti
